Well, this is unexpected in two ways. Not only did everyone think Julie Campbell was settling for life as guitarist for hire in Manchester bands since her much written about 2010 debut album Nerve Up, but then that she's come back with a track that trades in the whipcord angular guitar of her debut for a full-on workout by way of the early 80s NYC underground post-disco scene from where the currently (and deservedly) hip Arthur Russell made his name. Six minutes of vocal sampling, cowbell and drum pad-heavy percussion, heavy duty funk bass and sparse clipped guitar recalls fellow Mancunians A Certain Ratio or Liquid Liquid and doesn't diminish or let up over time. What would seem to be a fascinating left turn of an album follows next year.
