Music sharing

Something we like to do every so often is take the pulse of the last three months of major music radio stations via their last.fm accounts. These, therefore, are what was actually mostly filling the airwaves from July to September:

Radio 1

1 Pendulum 206
2 Eminem 197
3 Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP 188
4 Mark Ronson & The Business Intl 187
5 The xx 185
6 Brandon Flowers 169
7 Katy Perry 164
7 Katy B 164
9 Eliza Doolittle 155
10 Taio Cruz 153
11 Plan B 148
12 Roll Deep 140
13 30 Seconds to Mars 136
14 Biffy Clyro 132
14 Vampire Weekend 132
16 Klaxons 130
17 Muse 127
17 Example 127
19 Chase & Status 126
20 The Pretty Reckless 124
21 All Time Low 123
21 Rihanna 123
23 Arcade Fire 117
23 Jason Derülo 117
25 Magnetic Man 111
26 Paramore 110
27 McFly 109
27 The Saturdays 109
29 Kylie Minogue 108
30 You Me At Six 105
30 Marina & the Diamonds 105

Actually, various alternate versions of the Ronson/Intl. collective nominature, dangerously assuming they're all for his current stuff, would bring Mr Whippy Hair and co's tally to 208 in an Al Gore-style recounting after the event, and one that's necessary if we're not to believe Pendulum's song really is that popular. The xx at 5 is quite interesting, even taking their good news month into account - does the Mercury/daytime Radio 1 Venn diagram really reach that far?

1 Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP – We No Speak Americano 185
2 The xx – Islands 179
3 Katy B – Katy On a Mission 163
3 Brandon Flowers – Crossfire 163
5 Eminem – Love The Way You Lie 156
6 Taio Cruz – Dynamite 143
7 Eliza Doolittle – Pack Up 128
8 Klaxons – Echoes 120
8 Chase & Status – Let You Go 120
10 Katy Perry – Teenage Dream 114
11 Roll Deep – Green Light 112
12 30 Seconds to Mars – Closer To The Edge 109
13 Magnetic Man – I Need Air 102
14 All Time Low – Weightless 98
14 The Pretty Reckless – Miss Nothing 98
16 Arcade Fire – We Used to Wait 94
16 Labrinth – Let The Sun Shine 94
18 Vampire Weekend – White Sky 93
19 Ne-Yo – Beautiful Monster 91
19 Mark Ronson & The Business Intl – The Bike Song 91
21 Plan B – Prayin' 90
22 Rihanna – Hard 89
22 Mark Ronson & The Business Intl – Bang Bang Bang 89
22 McFly – Party Girl 89
25 Pendulum – Witchcraft 88
26 The Saturdays – Missing You 87
27 Pendulum – The Island 86
28 Paloma Faith – New York 85
28 Paramore – Careful 85
28 Flo Rida / David Guetta – Club Can't Handle Me 85

It does make you wonder what the other three Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP plays were for. (Remixes? Someone done a spoof?)

Radio 2

1 Amy Macdonald 145

26 Seal 68
27 Imelda May 67
27 Robbie Williams / Gary Barlow 67
29 Michael Bublé 65
30 Thea Gilmore 64

Brandon Flowers - he has crossover potential. Interesting to see Andy Burrows' I Am Arrows in there while ignored by Radio 1, and that after many years of being the next big thing Gilmore is finally making some headway on radio. The Red and Blue albums are being reissued soon for some reason, but otherwise that Beatles rush looks odd.

1 Brandon Flowers – Crossfire 123
2 Rumer – Slow 110
3 Amy Macdonald – This Pretty Face 108
4 Eliza Doolittle – Pack Up 103
4 The Hoosiers – Choices 103

30 Lissie – When I'm Alone 40

Arcade Fire that far clear is fascinating, reflective of the hyperanticipation around The Suburbs. Isn't that Count and Donald Sinden track a bit of a lie, given it's only will and Kai on the track? And Best Coast, that popular?

1 Arcade Fire – We Used to Wait 116

And it really is about Clarks shoes. Who knew in these post-bling days that the erstwhile plain favourite of the schoolchild would prove such a tool, although from the lower middle class white perspective if the song from their new advert was taking off just as much we wouldn't complain.

Not sure what the station's current operational status is - those song figures look low and those artist charts generic, and Violet Hill that much in mid-2010?
